making an adult tricycle
« on: January 17, 2008, 09:24:23 AM »
my wife  after her stroke has gained weigh and not able to get excercise to reduce it so a tricycle was perhaps the answer

just for the start i had an old mobility scooter differential that had its gear teeth  destroyed.
so with the lathe i removed some of them and drilled the main gear so that to one side i could put a 18 tooth chain sprocket.
the original tube from the scooter was too long and needed the inner part lathed out to get a ball race in it so i just cut it off and the short end was then able to be placed in the lathe and a ball race inserted then the tube welded back in place.
.
a 20 mm by 20mm thick square  tubes were built into a square frame and the original ends of the ex mobility scooter  axel tubes were attached to a MM thick sheet metal  plate.
after both sides of the axles  were cut to size and the axles placed in their tubes the two tubes were attached to the diff gears and then accurately lined up in a straight line.
this was very difficult but with perseverance and a little bit of shuffling the assembly was welded and secured with bolts
The wheels were from a wheel chair as they are very substantial so the ball races were removed and a steel plug placed in one side to fit the axel.
some difficulty in drilling a hole in the hub but an extended drill of 200 mm was made and the 6 mm hole drilled  then the plug was also drilled and tapped with 6 mm metric thread.,
this was so that if any of the spokes needed to be replaced the plug could be removed and the spokes repaired.
the other side of the hub i used an old ball race as  although it will never be needed to turn it was a convenient piece of material to accurately locate th Axel in the wheel hub.

pic high res, of the rear assembly without the 10 speed gearbox

just added the 10 speed box a short chain to the multi sprockets and a frame around it

and here is one of the wife telling me where to put the handle bars

nearly finished  just the chain guard and a clip to hold the wifes gammy foot on the pedal.
susessfull trial today with 1.3 km ride  and no problems

soon she will get out of bottom gear of the 15 speed set and hopfully get some of the weight she desperatly wants to loose
