There was an answer nearby, and small white creature emerged from the shadows of night. A kitten, a cub, barely weaned, and now orphaned. Unafraid, the little cat approached its mother, and mewled its grief. Its wide golden eyes watched Nylor as he inspected the grul?s body and recovered his knife and sword. Then, fighting the agony and rising nausea, the young Noric returned to the cats. The little snowlion sniffed and licked at his fingers, and did not protest when Nylor picked it up and carried it back to his crude shelter. Nylor wrapped his cloak around the cub to keep it warm
err i believe you are fond of cats.
lovely sub story of 'you help me i help you'
you believe correctly, sir

I'm also fond of dogs (I've raised two over the years) and other animals,
but cats are extra-cool!

they seem to be remarkably fussy about their toilet and general appearance - though lately, with the two of them taking sand baths in my back yard... and it would be nice if they could extend that to their eating habits (though they occasionally like to help wash the dishes) - and they have a nice balance of independence and companionship ... and they do keep the place rodent-free (which, in a wheat-belt town, is no small thing!).
The snowlion cub, I probably don't have to tell you by now, is based on Ali - that was the change I had to make to this draft - in the previous draft, the older snowlion and Nylor fight it out, and the animal companion he finds (in the old chapter 5) is a wolf cub, but that never really worked... and Ali's personality and antics are perfect for the story

The reason my little black lapnapper is called Tasha comes from this story - later, a young black panther becomes Aron's companion; her name is Tashne Edu, 'Tasha' to her friends ... the first time I held the tiny black kitten in my hand, I said to Megan 'her name is 'Nol Tashne Edu' (meaning 'little black hunter'). Megan asked me what I was talking about, so I gave her the manuscript and said, 'here - read the story'
