Just the Daily Goss...
« on: September 02, 2005, 11:56:32 PM »
Seeing I've finally managed to get back on line (albeit on dial-up) ... thought I'd celebrate by starting a new thread...
Actually, I thought I sould start a new thead for the odd daily bits of gossip and personal news ... ("I'm ba-a-ack!!"  :-D) ... because they wouldn't fit anywhere else ... so I guess this was the next best idea ...  :idea1:
1. I'm now living at the cottage in Goomalling...  :-) ... with about 200 cartons!, waiting to be unpacked...  :-P
2. The dial-up here is almost as fast as the broadband was at Lesmurdie ...  :-D ... downside: I can't take phone calls, and I have to do the dial-up routine... and for some reason, I cannot yet access my email or my webmail ...  :?
3. I'll only be popping in occasionally... there is a heap of work to do around here ... and I'm already exhausted!  :-P
Talk again when I've got the bugs worked out of my email...

cool idea was waondering what sort of topic that would be keeping this forum alive till the crowds  start joining.
i know the feeling when all the junk is in the cartons and now where to put them.
tried my electric scooter out to the local library to see how the logistics worked out time and economics.
40 minutes there and 40 minutes back
so the scooter has to be speeded up to the max alowable under law (12 km/hr) how ever i am building a new gearbox from cast alloy and it will have a set of chain drive cogs and this will enable me to change gear ratios to fine tune the speeds.
atm. i am aiming at a 15 km top speed  and this will enable me to get into the city as fast as driving the car when you take into account.

1 the parking problems(park on foot path)
2 heavy traffic and lights
3 walking distance from parking site to where i want to go
4 armchair ride from house to shop
5 no speeding tickets. :-D
6 as everyone is using cars to get around the footpaths are empty most of the way to town so slowing down to take a short cut is no problem.

the higher speed transaxel that would be available is a load of engineering crap and costs $2500
so i am learning how to  mold a gearbox/transaxel casing in alloy and after the patterns are made will cost me about $20  to get cast
after that it is just lathe work and educating myself into the finer points of gearbox design.
i will be using some gear wheels off a honda nifty scooter as they are designed to be' bulletproof'  and last 100,000 km at least.
the original scooter gear wheels can be cut with ordinary tool steel  and the scooter gearwheels  needed the best grade tungsten carbide tipped tool steel to cut them.

have a good day cran

was driving along a busy highway and saw some new nails lying on the road and to the side.
wow fast highway and fast cars and nails dont mix.
so as it was not too far from my place i drove home and got a powerfull magnet and a small container
well there were a lot more that i thought and ended up with a plastic bag bursting at the seams with 4 kilo of nails
worth about 30 dollars
anyone for some 50 mm nails ive got plenty

Hey there sorry to intrude Piersdad and Cran but I could not help but think about the expensive transaxle. Could you change the wheels ie tyre diameter to effectively vary the gearing.. I mention it cause that could be cheaper and easier solution.
While I,m here thanks for fixing my photo.. I have updated it however as I have in astronomydaily.com

hi alex  this thread  is for every one to gossip in.

the gears were made from a shitmetal mild steel and had completely stripped out after 5000 km.
this is the crap shoprider put in their 3-4 grand mobility scooters.
they depend on the odd number of teeth in each gear so that every 9 th rev only, does the same tooth ,touch the same tooth on the other gear wheel.
so when minor trauma to a tooth occures it is eventually smoothed out by the other gear teeth.
larger wheels only gives a small increase in speed.

so as i had an old shop rider transaxel i used the wheels and axel shafts? to make a vastly superior part gear(7-1) from the motor and a chain drive to the diff.
the gears are from a nifty fifty scooter and are hard as the hobs of hell .

any way the 14 km speed is 2 km above the legal limit for mobility scooters(hope i get a speeding ticket one day) and fast enough to not be boring and slow enough to make the city sights interesting to look at.
and only 4 to 6 minutes slower than the car to get to most of the nearby places.

glad you got the pic sorted out,? saw the modified one on the other site and thought thats better and then when i came back here you had already sorted it out.?

Thanks for not making fun of my ears :-D
That seems an odd idea re gears but what would I know.
I have had in mind for a while an electric vehicle such as yours or say a golf buggy an fitting a sun roof of 2 x 8o watt solar panels. The idea being to use it as a mobil toolbox..I walk miles from the shed to the job getting tools etc. All my cooking (except for my solar oven) is with wood gathered around the property.. so it becomes a real chore.. I can imagine bringing in small supplies on such a unit.

good idea  as long as the distance is not too great as it is the short trips where the electric vehicle is best.
the cost of batteries would be the highest thing.
if a second hand buggy is used and the batteries are  a bit old then all that suffewrs is the range of the vehicle getting less each week.
till you get peed off and ether get new batteries or dump it.
i think golf buggies are approx 15 km to 20 km top speed

What amp hours rating are the batteries in your vehicle and the horse power..er rated in watts if poss. And approximate stats for a golf buggy?

all up weight of the scooter is about 170 kg and the 24 volt 78 amp hour (very old ) batteries will give me at least 2 1/2 hours driving (have ot tried the limit )
running current is 19 amps and the motor is rated at 2 hp. but is cruising at under 1/4 hp. so safe range is 30 km.
not had a great deal of experience with golf type buggies  but generally they have 100 amp hour 48 volt system and should give about 2 hours running.
if you get to see one you think is ok price wise and suitable give me the running current ( measured with an inline ampmeter) while cruising at full speed.
the voltage
the amp hour capacity of the batteries and their manufacture.
the approx age of the batterieds and i will give you a free evaluation of its range and cost per mile related to units used and battery replacemnet costs.

Hi Piersdad, and Piers38,

It seems my first post about being back was a trifle premature  :|
... my computer started to die the next day (well, the processor) ... so, after pfaffing around for a couple of days trying to fix it, I joined the 21st century, and then spent a few more days trying to integrate my old data with my new computer (and lost all of my automatic settings in the process - including a lot of bookmarks and passwords, like yours! ... then found out I was on the wrong internet plan and it would have cost me a small fortune ... then had troubles accessing my account to change it ... then gave the ISP some headaches as they tried to change it ... then went away for a few days   :|
... now, I'm back...  :-)

So, I'd better go and catch up with everything...
have you seen the new BAUT forum?

Back from the mountain...
Million dollar idea for the week...if they are not there already.
Powered (electric) super market trolleys. It will be accepted because it is indulgent of our desire to make life much easier to buy more in one hit. As a salesman I could sell such a concept to a supermarket because if they didnt buy I would sell to their opposition. The most powerful marketing approach selling the competative edge.. which market would you go to.. the one with the motorised ones I bet. Did a little astro photography (see astronomydaily.com for fotos) and thinking about water injection to ease fuel bill..I think its good for hills..

its bad enough with kid stealing trolleys now
i can just imagine the local park strewn with motoised trolleys with flast batteries.
one of out local supermarkets has mobility scooters for the elderly and disabled and they \are a good advert for the local mobility scooter market.

water injection is good if it can be suitably controlled.
a frien of mine was getting 36 mpg from a 2 litre moter with water injection.
he had a 20 litre water tank as well as his petrol tank and  i think he used a valve theat opened with the throttle.
modern fuel injected motors are a easy thing  for water injection  as you only have to use a fine spray in the air cleaner intake

I'm going to be away from home for a few days...

Megan is having an operation on her wrist ... and she'll need 'a hand' around the place until she recovers enough to go on her trip to Adelaide and Maldon (Victoria) for the Folk Festival ... :-)

I still haven't typed up Daniel Lee yet,

but will try and fit that in today before I finish up.

In the meantime, I thought I might show you what I was doing to Megan's Study (or home office) - the walls were originally a fairly bland off-white with lots of holes and marks, and because it is a smallish area, I thought it needed some depth and texture:

Megan took the photo, and after processing it on her computer, she found a 'ghost' in the wall... can you see it?
