woods used for cellos and violins
« on: July 24, 2005, 06:03:58 PM »
I have made 109 instruments with the top made from
quatersawn canadian cedar.
generally close grained and no sap stains.
despite the adherence to sitka spruce my the
established makers my experience with cedar is exceptionaly good.
lovely sound and good resonance
the only time i used genuine sitka spruce i had endless trouble getting it to sound as good as the rest of the 109 instruments.

any one else tried cedar

What a stunning instrument! If it sounds anything like it looks, you sir, are indeed a genius 8-)

yes it sounds as good as it looks? although it is a violin it is set up at the moment as a viola which it supposed to be too small to resonate at the lower frequencies but it is at the moment used by a very talented viola player as his preferred instrument.

with one of my cellos i sold the boy who had it was getting so good that his family shifted to geneva so that he could get a tutor good enough to teach him. he was asked by his dad(wealthy) if he wanted another cello and he was not able to get on anywhere. so i was chuffed at that.
