A day at the races

A day at the races

The family decided to go to the races this evening and we all took just 20 dollars each.
When this was spent then that was it.
Race one and daughter who had never bet on anything before chose the no 4 horse for a win
“Why” we asked
“Because I like its looks”
Well she is a special needs person and we put her bet on.
The horse came in first and she trebled her money.
The rest of us were down with no wins.
Well we asked daughter what was her next choice and she looked vaguely at the race book and chose a horse called ‘cot case’
She said she wanted just a place bet this time.
Race 2 and her horse came in second and again she doubled her money.
The rest of us again were down on our luck and wishing daughters luck.
Race 3 and again she looked vaguely at the race book and chose ‘great ven’
We all looked at its form and decided that it did not stand a chance and chose other horses even though daughters winning streak seemed attractive.
Well her horse came in 3rd and paid a great dividend.
Our now wealthy daughter decided not to bet on the next race.
We tried to get her to choose but then asked her why

She said her horse no 4 won first race came second in 2nd race and then 3rd in the 3rd race so I think he must be getting too tired to win again.

She thought the same horse (no 4) was running in all the 3 races

going forward some 23 years and her 22 year old daughter gos to the same race track with a friend.
they were dressed to the nines with hats and nice outfits.
not betting just strutting around and getting sunburnt.
last race and $4 left so just picked any horse  to bet on.
the race starts and to their surprise their horse wins.
not conversant with the thing called betting she had no clue what the ticket was worth and presented it to the tote.

she relates
"first he shelled out a $100 note'
her voice rises a half octave.
"next he shelled out 2 $50 notes"
her voice up an octave.
"then he shelled out some $20s and change"

so their day at the races was repaid with interest
