build a oscilloscope out of an old TV
« on: June 24, 2007, 04:23:32 AM »
This is how to build a oscilloscope out of an old TV ---------
U know those TV things are like a heart monitors that are hooked up to the heart .with the line across it that go's like waves and peaks
...
well you can make one from an old TV and hook it up to your stereo
all of the lines make a wave Patton to your sounds ........They look cool
so how did you hook it up to your TV?
You rewire the TV yoke on the neck of the TV tube like in the back of the TV .....to hook that up to your stereo
you need a yoke with 4 coils of wire like 2 outside coils 2 inside coils the inside ones are the ones that face the tube
Get the two beginnings of the wire from the out side coils... solder them to give the other ends there is 2 of hook them up to 6 volts AC for most color TV s and 18 volts for B&W …. this will
stretch the dot on the TV in to a horizontal line
(( You need two opposing magnetic fields to deflect the electron beam ))
Then do the same thing with the 2 inside coils and hook them up to the speaker wires on your stereo turn up the volume Red Blue & Green lines all getting bent to the sound waves..........
The dark side of the moon ....looks just out of it the clock ticking.....

Don't disconnect use the existing TV yoke  tie it up in the cabinet some were.. get a yoke from another TV
keep just the end power supply plug
......... get an old radio gram use the wires that go to the needle on the record player … hook them up to a old speaker and there is your microphone  ----- try other speakers if it dos not work at first… a speaker will work in reverse and make a microphone …or use a amp and mic 20 watts will do for the colour TV
...
The TV only has to get light in the tube dos not have to get pics
or sounds..... to be able to be turned into a oscilloscope

they don't take long to make say 4 or 5 hours if all goes well although I have spent 10
hours on them.. if you are new to electronics then it will take a bit longer

its just a matter of having some one to guide you but most of all just get old stuff and pull things to bits

If your TV is like carbon tracking that is were the electric goes a cross the out side of the wires or on the back of the screen this makes an interference the TV picks this up and the reception is not good
You can get a TYPE of CRC to clean this of. some times this can make the TV look a lot better will not look like fog some times i have repaired TV again.--------- There is a bit to know about this part I can tell you about this Just ask --------

...real Oscilloscopes pro built are used for testing any thing from sound waves. To voltage. And Hz = frequency and so on....Althow. a home made one can detect full wave rectified DC . are good for testing battery charges and car alternators .the building of them is more so you under stand how they work you learn heaps . and can be fun a home made one should be able to detect
AC frequency 20,000hz) is just a little above what we can hear,...( audio visual effects) like you can see sound so to speak or the wave Patten it makes ... like you can sing over it to see your voice breaking as mine dos badly…....
Know if you .or any one you know wishes to make one .....and are you capable of
not electrocuting them self's as with high voltage it can kill so you mast have common sense..just give me a yell and i will tell you more .------------.Don't shock your self -----------

yes watch out for the high voltage it will burn as well as shock.

so allways stay clear when the set is turned on and watch out the microphone cables are well clear of the end of the tv tube as that is where the nasty volts are they are present in all the termanels at the end of the tube.

if you do a search of audacity  sound programme it does the same thing using your computor.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows

but  the tv convertion is more fun if you are inventive

piersdad -----Hi------
You  run the microphone from an amplifier.   Its the speaker wires that go into the yoke on the neck of the TV tube --- If you use standard electrical insulation  and you have cleaned things with carbon track cleaner made things neat and tidy --- clamp down the wires ---so as they will not pull out  if tripped over --- the useal comon sence  aproch to electrical stuff --- You should have success

a lot of interest in this as all the tube tvs are geting discarded now so millions of tonns of them are on the scrap heap
