Steve was looking for a cheap flat and the only one near his work place was a grotty one above a fish and chip takeaway.
Well beggars can’t be choosers so he set up home.
The occasional aroma of fried fish was some times a reminder that the luxuries in life were basic and chips were in, but lobster was out.
Now Steve’s flat had a rear window from his kitchen right over the back door of the takeaway shop and on Thursday he noticed that a delivery vehicle turned up below his window and placed several crates of live lobsters just below his window.
He watched with greedy eyes as the lobsters tried to climb out the top crate but could not. The crates stayed there till the shop owner came out about half and hour later.
Next week the same happened and so with a bit of ingenuity he lowered a string with a noose on its end to the crate of wriggling lobsters below. Soon there was a lobster entangled in the noose and a gentle pull resulted in a live lobster being saved from one fate for another.
This suited Steve fine as the next day was pay day and always Thursday was the day he was always short of the money. So Thursdays dinner was a luxurious repast of lobster on bread.
He finally decided to give up this luxury when he hard a argument below his flat window.
“you always give me one lobster short”
“but I always count them and there are always the right amount” said the driver.
Oh’ well that was a few weeks of luxury
