Two new moons around Pluto
« on: December 03, 2005, 09:57:19 AM »
Hubble spies companions further out than Charon.

The Hubble space telescope spotted two new moons orbiting pluto. If confirmed, the moons will join Charon, which was discovered by ground based observers in 1978.
With three satellites, Pluto will be the first body in the Kuiper belt to have more than one moon.
The new moons are twice as far away from pluto as Charon.
Another Kuiper Belt object has also recently been found to have a moon. Xena, which is larger than Pluto, was originally discovered by Brown of Caltech. Brown discoeverd Xenas moon using the observatory 10m (33ft) Keck Observatory.
